Loudoun Board Loses Filter-Policy Author

A week after a federal judge ruled against the Loudoun County (Va.) Library's motion to dismiss a suit against its restrictive Internet filtering policies, the author of the challenged policy has submitted his resignation as trustee.

Citing his "major new responsibilities" as a recently elected state assembly member, Richard Black wrote board members that he has "remained on the board as long as possible to ensure that the board policy against Internet pornography remains in place," and would step down when someone is named to replace him.

Also on the trustees' agenda is finding some $100,000 more to continue defending the library's use of blocking software on all its public Internet terminals, a policy Black helped put in place last October. The Washington Post reported April 16 that trustees have so far been paying legal costs from savings the library has realized from unfilled positions.
