Archives-Run Nixon Library UnlikelyLawyers for the estate of President Richard M. Nixon and the Justice Department are preparing to go to court this summer over how much Nixon's tapes and papers are worth. Estate attorneys say $26 million; government lawyers were once quoted as saying "$2 million would be too much." According to the January 25 Washington Post, Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin is hoping for an unlikely out-of-court settlement on the higher value that would help finance construction of a new library facility run by the National Archives on the site of the privately run Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, California. Seized in 1974 to prevent the disgraced president from destroying them, the Nixon White House records consist of some 44 million items now being kept at the National Archives facility in College Park, Maryland, where unionized staff oppose the move to California.
