No Fire for BrimstoneThe Independence (Mo.) Board of Education opted July 10 to keep The Brimstone Journals by Ron Koertge on the shelves without restriction at the William Chrisman High School library over a parent’s challenge. The 2001 young adult novel describes events leading up to a student-planned attack on a high school through a series of the characters’ journal entries. “This parent was concerned about the profanity (in a few entries) as well as some of the subjects discussed in the book,” Deputy Superintendent Henry Russell said in the July 11 Blue Springs Examiner. The board followed the recommendation of the district’s Challenged Curriculum Committee. Russell said that even the committee members who expressed discomfort with the book’s subject matter did not want to ban it. Posted July 13, 2007. |
