Map Thief’s Restitution Upped to $2.3 Million

E. Forbes Smiley III, who was sentenced to 42 months in prison for stealing 98 rare maps from seven repositories in the United States and England, was ordered May 22 to pay $2.3 million in restitution to his victims. At the time of his sentencing last September, he was tentatively ordered to pay $1.9 million, but the figure was revised upward following efforts to recover the maps and assess their value, the Associated Press reported May 22.

“It’s bittersweet. It doesn’t mean that they’re going to get the money,” said John Koegel, attorney for some of the dealers, who said the payments will depend on Smiley’s ability to pay after he’s released from prison and the government’s ability to sell his assets.

In November, Boston Public Library reported that although it had recovered 34 antique maps, some three dozen maps that were used by Smiley in recent years, worth about $1 million, remained missing.
