Vancouver Strike Ends; Libraries ReopenVancouver (B.C.) Public Library staff returned to work October 22 after an 88-day strike over pay equity and benefits issues. CUPE 391 members voted 71% in favor of the agreement, the union reported October 19. The agreement was similar to the one overwhelmingly rejected ten days earlier, but also included the creation of a joint committee on classification issues, the inclusion of three more librarian positions in pay grade increases, the expansion of benefit coverage to include orthodics, and adjustments to the return-to-work agreement. “We’ve been saying all along that we went out on strike on a principle,” said union President Alex Youngberg. “Now we’re going back on a principle.” Most of VPL’s 22 branches reopened at normal operating hours October 24, although two opened late that day and two others did not open until October 25, according to a library press release.
